1. Why did Swami Haridas say Tansen was ‘talented’?

Ans: Tansen could copy the calls of birds and animals. One day, he roared like a tiger and frightened the travellers. Swami Haridas was impressed by his skills and called him ‘talented’.

2. Why did Akbar ask Tansen to join his court?

Ans: Tansen was a famous singer.  Akbar was very impressed by his voice. So he asked Tansen to join his court.

3. How do we know that Akbar was fond of Tansen? Give two reasons.

Ans: Akbar was fond of Tansen. The following reasons show it.

(i) He gave Tansen many presents to Tansen.

(ii)  Akbar often went to Tansen’s house to listen while he was practicing.

4. What did the other courtiers feel about Tansen?

Ans: The other courtiers were jealous of Tansen. They wanted to ruin Tansen.

5. (i) What happen if Raga Deepak is sung properly?

Ans: If Raga Deepak is sung properly, it makes the air so hot that the singer is burnt to ashes.

(ii) Why did Tansen’s enemies want him to sing the Raga?

Ans: The courtiers were jealous of Tansen and wanted to kill him.

6. Why did Tansen agree to sing Raga Deepak?

Ans: Tansen agreed to sing Raga Deepak because he could not disobey the emperor.

7. (i) What steps did he take to save himself?

Ans:. He taught his daughter and her friend to sing ‘Raga Megh’. It brought rain and thus saved his life

(ii) Did his plan work? How?

Ans: Yes, his plan worked. When he started Raga Deepak, water began to boil and flames lighted the lamps. Just then both girls began to sing Raga Megh and rain came down. In this way Tansen’s life was saved.

8. Are you interested in music? Do you like classical music? Name a few distinguished Indian musicians.

Ans:  Yes, I am interested in music. I like classical music. Naushad,  Amzad Ali Khan, R.D. Burman and  R.K.  Rahman are a few distinguished Indian musicians.
