Lesson 8 The Bear Story

 

Answer the following questions.

1. Where did the lady find the bear cub? How did she bring up?

Ans: The lady found the bear cub in the forest. She brought him up on the bottle.

2. The bear grew up but “he was a most amiable bear” Give three examples to prove it.

Ans : (i) He didn’t harm the cattle grazing in the field nearby.

(ii) Children used to ride on his back.

(iii) Dogs played with him.

3. What did the bear eat? There were two things he was not allowed to do. What were they?

Ans: He ate bread, porridge, potato, cabbage and turnip. He was not allowed to pluck apple from the tree and to disturb the beehives.

4. When was the bear tied up with a chain? Why?

Ans: The bear was tied up with a chain at night and on Sundays, when his mistress went to her sister’s house.

5. What happened one Sunday when the lady was going to her sister’s house? What did the lady do? What was the bear’s reaction?

Ans:  When the lady was half way through the forest, the bear reached there chasing her. The lady got angry. She rebuked him to go back. When he didn’t go back, she hit him on the nose. The bear remained calm.

6. Why was the bear looking sorry for himself in the evening? Why did the cook get angry with her mistress?

Ans:  The bear was looking sorry for himself in the evening because he had disobeyed his mistress. When the lady scolded the bear in the evening, the cook got angry. She told the lady that he had been good the whole day.
