1.  Why is the Giant called selfish?

Ans: The Giant is called selfish because he did not allow children to play in his garden.

2. On one occasion the children said : “How happy we are here!”  Later they said: “How happy we were here!” What are they referring to in both the cases?

Ans: In both the cases they are referring to the Giant’s garden. They say the first sentence when they are enjoying in the giant’s garden. But they say the second one when they are not allowed to play in the garden.

3.  (i) When spring came, it was still winter in the garden. What does winter stand for or indicate here?

(ii) Winter has been presented like a story with its own characters and their activities. Describe the story in your own words?

Ans:  (i) Winter indicates here lifelessness. The flowers did not bloom and the birds didn’t sing in the garden. There was no sign of joy.

(ii) When the Giant prevented the children to play in his garden, the winter had made a permanent stay in the garden. The Snow covered up the grass with white cloak and the frost painted the trees silver. The North Wind roared all day about the garden. The Hail rattled on the roof of the castle.

4.  Was the Giant happy or sad over the state of the garden?

Ans: The Giant was sad over the state of the garden.

5.  What effect did the linnet`s song have over the Hail and the North Wind?

Ans:  Hearing the linnet’s song, the Hail stopped dancing over his head and the North Wind ceased roaring.

1.  (i) The Giant saw the most wonderful sight. What did he see?

Ans:  He saw the children had crept in through a little hole. They were sitting on the trees. The trees had covered themselves with blossoms. The birds were singing.

(ii) What did he realise on seeing it?

Ans:  On seeing it, the Giant’s heart melted. He realized that he had been very selfish.

2.  Why was it still winter in one corner of the garden?

Ans: There was still winter in one corner of the garden because a little child was standing there. He was so small that he could not climb up the tree.

3. Describe the first meeting of the little boy and the Giant.

Ans: The giant gently took the boy in his hands and put him up into the tree. The tree broke at once into blossom. The little boy hugged the giant and kissed him.

4. Describe their second meeting after a long interval.

Ans: One day the Giant saw the boy under a tree which was covered with white blossoms. He came running to the boy. He saw prints of nails on the boy’s palms and feet. He got angry and said that he would kill the man who had wounded him. The boy told him that those were wounds of love. The boy added that as the Giant had allowed him to play in the garden, he would take him to His garden, the paradise.

5. The Giant lay dead, all covered with white blossoms. What does this sentence indicate about the once selfish Giant?

Ans: This sentence indicates that the Giant got peaceful death as he was no longer selfish.
